Eat and drink in Pollokshields

Pollokshields eats best on Albert Drive, Forth Street and Maxwell Road, where Pakistani grills, sweet shops and chai cafés sit side by side. Pollokshaws Road and Nithsdale Road add brunch cafés, wine bars and old Southside pubs. Hours below were checked on 13 October 2026, so confirm before you travel.

If you only eat one meal here

Pick by time of day. These five give a good taste of the area.

Desi breakfast at Desi Dhaba Chaiwala

Go before noon for nashta: slow-cooked paye, parathas and a cup of chai. It is at 21 Forth Street and opens at 9:00.

Street food at Pakistani Street Food

Biryani and chaat in a room decorated in the style of Pakistani truck art. Find it at 105 Albert Drive, open daily 10:00 to 21:00.

A vegetarian thali at Ranjit's Kitchen

A family-run Punjabi canteen serving thali, pakora and paneer. It is at 607 Pollokshaws Road and closed on Mondays.

Afghan dinner at Watan Grill

Order Kabuli pulao with lamb shank, or the lamb chops. It is at 219-221 St Andrews Road. Book ahead in the evening.

A glass of wine at Made From Grapes

A wine bar and bottle shop with small plates at 166-168 Nithsdale Road. Drink in, or take a bottle home. It is closed on Mondays.

Pakistani and South Asian restaurants

Most stay open until 23:00, so a late dinner is easy. Many serve halal meat and no alcohol; see the notes further down.

Breakfast and desi nashta

Nashta is a hearty Pakistani breakfast of slow-cooked curries, fried breads and sweet tea, often a weekend treat. Forth Street and Albert Drive serve it daily. For a Scottish start, Maxwell Road still has old-style morning rolls.

Cafés and brunch

The brunch cafés cluster on Pollokshaws Road and Kildrostan Street. Weekend queues are common at Bramble, so arrive early. Chai cafés open later and stay open into the night.

Tramway, at 25 Albert Drive, also has a café-bar. House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park has a café, open daily 10:00–17:00.

Bakeries

Asian bakeries here sell celebration cakes, rusks and savoury bakes. Most are open into the evening.

Deliciouscornerbakery is just outside Pollokshields, in Govanhill. It is about a 10-minute walk east of Albert Drive. Locals often call it Delicious.

Desserts, sweets and falooda

Albert Drive's sweet shops sell mithai by the box, priced by weight. Dessert cafés open late, often until 23:00 or later. Ambala Restaurant, on Forth Street, serves falooda.

Other cuisines

Nithsdale Road has a small run of newer neighbourhood restaurants. Pollokshaws Road and Shawlands cover most other cuisines.

Pubs and bars

The traditional pubs are on Pollokshaws Road, along the eastern edge of the area. Most open until midnight. Shawlands, a short walk south, has more.

Wine and cocktails

Nithsdale Road is the place for a glass of wine. Made From Grapes doubles as a bottle shop, so you can buy wine to take away.

In Scotland, shops can only sell alcohol between 10:00 and 22:00, every day. That includes bottle shops.

Takeaways and late-night food

Pollokshields eats late. Several kitchens serve until midnight, and a few until 01:00 or 02:00. Most of the grills and burger bars below serve halal meat.

Food words to know

Karahi

A curry cooked fast over high heat in a wok-like pan of the same name, usually with tomato, ginger and green chilli.

Nihari

Beef or lamb stew, slow-cooked overnight and eaten at breakfast with naan.

Paye

A rich, slow-cooked stew of lamb or beef trotters, a breakfast favourite.

Haleem

A thick, porridge-like stew of meat, lentils and wheat, popular during Ramadan.

Paratha

Layered flatbread fried in ghee or oil.

Nashta

The Urdu word for breakfast. A desi nashta might be paye, nihari or halwa puri with chai.

Chaat

Savoury street snacks topped with yoghurt, chutneys and spices.

Pakora

Vegetables, chicken or fish in spiced gram-flour batter, deep fried.

Biryani

Spiced rice layered and cooked with meat or vegetables.

Falooda

A cold dessert drink of rose syrup, milk, vermicelli, basil seeds and ice cream.

Mithai

South Asian sweets such as barfi, jalebi and gulab jamun, sold by weight and given at weddings and Eid.

Paan

A betel leaf folded around fillings such as areca nut and sweet spices, chewed after meals.

Karak chai

Strong black tea boiled with milk, sugar and spices.

Kabuli pulao

Afghanistan's national rice dish, with lamb, carrots and raisins.

Halal, alcohol and Ramadan

Halal food

Most Pakistani, Afghan and South Asian restaurants and takeaways here serve halal meat. If it matters to you, ask the staff. W Cranston, at 134 Nithsdale Road, is the area's traditional non-halal butcher.

Alcohol and bringing your own

Many South Asian restaurants and cafés here do not serve alcohol. Do not assume you can bring a bottle. Always ask before bringing your own. Dini, on Nithsdale Road, is listed as bring your own.

Ramadan

During Ramadan many Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Albert Drive and Maxwell Road get busy in the evenings, when people break the fast at iftar. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, and Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March 2027. Both dates depend on the moon, so check nearer the time.
